Residents living near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire have voiced apprehension after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a warning that the air base could be considered a “legitimate target” amid ongoing tensions with Iran. The threat followed reports that the US military, operating from RAF Fairford, had launched an aerial mission targeting Iranian missile facilities earlier this month.
The Gloucestershire base has hosted US forces since March, following approval by then Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for defensive strikes from British soil if necessary. However, Iran’s recent statement marks an escalation, casting unease on the surrounding communities about their safety.
It remains uncertain whether the long-range B1 bomber involved in the recent operation took off directly from Fairford or from another location after a stopover. The UK government has reiterated its commitment to national defence and its readiness to respond to any threats. Nevertheless, local concern is rising, with many questioning the level of risk posed to their neighbourhood.

Roz Savage, Liberal Democrat MP for South Cotswolds, has sought clarity from Defence Secretary Wes Streeting regarding the security measures at RAF Fairford. In her correspondence, she acknowledged constituents' worries and requested assurances about the safety protocols protecting both the base and nearby communities. Dr Savage also inquired about communication plans to keep local representatives and residents informed of any changes in threat levels.
She shared that Gloucestershire Police are collaborating closely with the Ministry of Defence on security and will be conducting extra reassurance patrols in the area.
“Local residents deserve confidence that any risks have been thoroughly assessed, and that appropriate measures are in place to protect both the base and the surrounding communities,” Dr Savage stated.
Community responses to the MP’s efforts reflect widespread anxiety. Some residents directly expressed fears about living in close proximity to a potential target in an international conflict, demanding transparency about the real danger they face. Others called for the withdrawal of US forces from RAF Fairford, advocating against the UK’s involvement in military actions that may escalate tensions.
Derek Walters, former Liberal Democrat councillor, criticised the government’s support for what he describes as an “illegal war,” urging for a reconsideration of the base’s use in these operations.
Despite the community’s concerns, a spokesperson for Fairford Town Council noted that no formal complaints about the threat have been received from residents.
On 25 July, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and Fairford Action groups held a protest outside the base, highlighting the danger of the site being viewed as a military target. Sophie Bolt, CND’s general secretary, urged the incoming prime minister to halt the usage of British bases for US military actions, calling for a peaceful diplomatic resolution to the Iran issue.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to defence under international law, emphasising ongoing cooperation with NATO allies to protect the nation.
Dr Savage is scheduled to visit Fairford to engage with constituents directly and address their concerns.
