Buxton’s Triumph, Valuable Prize Money, and Cheltenham Town’s Next Challenge – Steve Cotterill Reflects After FA Cup Second Round Win

Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill shared his thoughts after a thrilling FA Cup second-round victory against Buxton, a game that saw the hosts come from behind to score five second-half goals and secure a 6-2 win.

“Buxton had a great day and wonderful support from their fans,” Cotterill acknowledged. “At halftime, they were 2-1 up and might have hoped for more, but we improved significantly in the second half despite battling tricky wind conditions early on. It seems like every time we defend the home end, the wind drops — something we definitely need to keep an eye on.”

Reflecting on the halftime situation, Cotterill remained calm and focused. “We knew our plan and just needed to execute it better. Buxton brought key players back, which made it a tough match, but we should’ve been four goals ahead by the break given the chances we had. We prepared thoroughly and didn’t take them lightly. The mistake that led to a silly free-kick was frustrating, but that can happen when players are desperate to perform.”

A tactical change saw Robbie Cundy replace Scot Bennett, who wasn’t expected to play the entire game after a long injury spell. “We wanted some continuity in the back four but with injuries and returns, it was an ideal moment to give Scotty and Robbie a run-out, as well as Hakeeb Adelakun,” Cotterill explained. “Hakeeb showed good signs but I believe he can deliver even more.”

Injury concerns arose when Ryan Broom had to be substituted early after a suspected hamstring issue. “Ryan might have nicked his hamstring, which is unfortunate. We had to adjust quickly, but thankfully the team managed well.”

The five-goal display in the second half was a confidence boost, yet Cotterill remained humble. “We did our job, but today was really Buxton’s day. I also praised their fans after the match — it felt right. Cheltenham Town has a history of success but we never take anything for granted.”

The manager highlighted the financial benefits of progressing in the FA Cup. “The prize money of £120,000 from two games is excellent for the club.” Looking ahead to round three, Cotterill is eager for a big draw. “We want the biggest team possible, no matter where or when. We’ll batten down the hatches, take the money, and run home!”

On player mentality, Cotterill stressed the value of hard work and passion. “If the lads love the game, they’ll improve. They’ve worked hard and I’m pleased with their efforts so far.” Despite some setbacks in the first half, he supports Scot Bennett fully. “Mistakes happen; Scotty accepted the halftime change professionally. We’ll just focus on the positives from today.”
