CCTV footage has revealed a burglar breaking into a barbershop in Gloucester by smashing a window. The clip shows the intruder raising his hand to obscure the camera once he realizes he is being recorded.
The owner of The Barbers, located on College Street, reports that the break-in caused approximately £2,000 in damages despite the thief only stealing £25 from the till and two bobble hats. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 24, and police are currently investigating. Reports suggest another nearby shop in this historic, tourist-frequented area also experienced a break-in the same night.
Lance, the shop owner, expressed profound dismay: “I’m absolutely devastated. I pour my heart and soul into this business, serving my customers every day. This break-in feels like a punch to the gut, especially when someone just wants a quick fix at the expense of others.”

This isn’t an isolated event. Lance notes ongoing vandalism and theft problems in the area over the last year, affecting multiple businesses, including smashed windows and stolen goods. The recent attack forced him to close his shop for the day.
The intruder gained access by stealing a paving slab from down the street and hurling it through the window. Upon entering, the thief headed straight to the till but only managed to take a few notes and two bobble hats.
Lance voiced his frustration with the limited police presence: “There aren’t enough officers, not just here but across the country. It’s not their fault—it’s the result of government cuts—but something needs to change. People’s livelihoods are at stake.”
Uncertain whether the culprit is a drug addict or homeless individual, Lance lamented the impact on the otherwise charming street: “This is one of the nicest streets in the city, but it’s disheartening to see boarded-up shops when tourists come to visit the cathedral.”
The burglary unfolded at 4:10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24. Meanwhile, another business—a beauty salon on Southgate Street—also reported a smashed door on the same night, highlighting a broader wave of crime affecting local merchants.
