Buckland’s Heroics Secure Cheltenham League Senior Charity Cup for Shurdington Rovers

Nathan Buckland emerged as the hero for Shurdington Rovers, helping them clinch the Cheltenham League Senior Charity Cup in a dramatic penalty shootout at Whaddon Road on Wednesday evening. Facing FC Wickhamford, the match ended in a 2-2 draw before a crowd of 350, with Buckland’s remarkable goalkeeping making all the difference in the shootout.

Throughout the game, Shurdington Rovers, soon to compete in the Premier Division as Division One runners-up, demonstrated resilience and skill. After a bright start from Premier Division leaders Wickhamford, Hadley Gilbert gave Shurdington the lead in the 14th minute. However, Alex McMillan quickly leveled the score for Wickhamford just two minutes later. Despite Wickhamford creating several promising chances through Oliver Godfrey and Finley Hawkins, the sides remained even at half-time, with Declan Lines making key saves to keep Wickhamford in the match.

Shurdington retook the lead early in the second half when Gary Robinson found the net in the 50th minute, following an impressive build-up involving Jamie Moore. Wickhamford responded through substitute Aaron Edmondson, who capitalized on a defensive error to equalize in the 63rd minute. The remainder of regulation time saw close attempts from both teams, including Lee Brady’s near goal after a free-kick, but neither side could find a winner.

The match proceeded to a tense penalty shootout. Buckland’s outstanding performance included two crucial saves, notably denying Will Green’s effort with a stunning dive to his right. This save set up Taylor-Jay Orchard to calmly slot home the winning penalty, sealing a 4-3 shootout victory for Shurdington Rovers.

Despite a recent heavy 4-0 defeat to Mickleton in the Minor Charity Cup final, Shurdington has also celebrated success this season by winning the GFA Minor County Cup (North). The Charity Cup competitions this season have raised funds for local causes including Sue Ryder, Cheltenham Sports Association for the Disabled, and the Butterfly Garden.
