Buckland the Hero as Shurdington Rovers Claim Cheltenham League Senior Charity Cup

Nathan Buckland emerged as the decisive hero for Shurdington Rovers as they lifted the Cheltenham League Senior Charity Cup at Whaddon Road on Wednesday evening.

In a thrilling encounter witnessed by 350 fans at Cheltenham Town’s home ground, Buckland’s exceptional goalkeeping proved pivotal. He saved two penalties in the shootout, including a stunning stop against Will Green, which paved the way for Taylor-Jay Orchard to score the winning penalty and secure a 4-3 shootout victory.

The match was a rollercoaster, with Shurdington, Division One runners-up and soon to be Premier Division competitors, taking the lead twice during regular time. Hadley Gilbert opened the scoring in the 14th minute after FC Wickhamford started brightly. Alex McMillan quickly equalized two minutes later, and Wickhamford created several further chances but failed to capitalize despite energetic attacks from Oliver Godfrey and Finley Hawkins.

Goalkeeper Declan Lines made a crucial save from Gilbert before halftime, keeping the scores level. Early in the second half, Gary Robinson restored Shurdington’s lead with a goal involving Jamie Moore in the build-up. Wickhamford’s Ben Sluman was denied by Jake Andrews' block, but substitute Aaron Edmondson soon punished a defensive slip to level the game at 2-2 in the 63rd minute.

The match nearly shifted in the 80th minute when Lee Brady headed just wide from a free-kick, but neither side scored again, sending the game to penalties.

In the shootout, Buckland’s superb saves proved decisive. After both sides traded early conversions, Buckland stopped Jordan Izod’s penalty and then dived to his right to deny a late effort, sealing victory for Shurdington. The triumph was particularly sweet following their 4-0 defeat to Mickleton in the Minor Charity Cup final just a week earlier.

Proceeds from this season’s Charity Cup matches will support Sue Ryder, Cheltenham Sports Association for the Disabled, and the Butterfly Garden, underlining the event’s commitment to community causes.
