Buckingham Palace Responds to White House Correspondents' Dinner Shooting Incident

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles is “greatly relieved” after US President Donald Trump, the First Lady, and other guests escaped unharmed during an armed attack at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. The troubling incident occurred on Saturday evening when an individual attempted to force his way into the event.

The King, who is set to begin a four-day state visit to the United States Monday with Queen Camilla, is being closely briefed on all developments. Private messages of concern and gratitude have reportedly been exchanged between the Royal couple and President Trump and Melania Trump, acknowledging the bravery of security personnel who prevented further harm.

Video from the scene captured President Trump being rapidly escorted out by Secret Service agents, who also helped Vice-President JD Vance reach safety. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, is believed to have been armed with a shotgun and handgun and was staying at the Washington Hilton, the dinner’s venue.

Following the attack, one officer, shielded by a bulletproof vest, was hospitalized. Allen faces multiple charges, including assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, with more charges anticipated.

This incident echoes the narrow assassination attempt on President Trump during a 2024 campaign rally when he was wounded. In light of these events, UK officials, including Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones, have emphasized ongoing security assessments regarding the King’s safety during his forthcoming visit.

This state visit, marking King Charles’s first as sovereign to the US, will highlight the 250th anniversary of American independence and include commemorations such as a “block-party” celebration and recognition of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. UK leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer and Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, have expressed solidarity with the US, condemning the attack as a severe threat to democratic institutions and press freedom.

Both British and American authorities are working collaboratively to ensure the King’s security while honoring the significance of this historic visit.
