Brits Urged to Follow 11am NHS Rule as Heatwave Could Push Temperatures Above 30C This Weekend

With the Met Office forecasting a significant rise in temperatures this weekend, Brits are being reminded to adhere to the NHS’s crucial 11am rule to stay safe in the heat. Certain parts of the UK could see temperatures exceeding 30°C, marking an exceptionally warm spell for May.

The Met Office predicts daytime highs of 28°C to 29°C in England and Wales over the weekend, with the southeast potentially topping 30°C. Deputy Chief Forecaster Greg Wolverson noted on the Met Office website, “A very warm period of weather will develop through the weekend and into next week for much of the UK. High pressure will dominate, bringing mostly fine and settled conditions.”

Exceptions include parts of northwestern Scotland, where cooler temperatures, cloud cover, and occasional rain are expected. There is also a minor chance of thunderstorms in southern areas late Friday into Saturday.

On social media platform X, the Met Office highlighted the upcoming change: “After a cool May so far, a prolonged period of very warm weather is increasingly likely. Temperatures will rise well above the average for May, with the hottest spots possibly exceeding 30°C.”

Amid this heatwave warning, the NHS stresses the health risks associated with high temperatures. “While most people enjoy warm weather, excessive heat can pose serious health dangers,” the NHS explains. “During heatwaves, the number of illness and deaths rises. Ensure you and those around you stay safe when hot weather strikes.”

To reduce the risk, the NHS advises avoiding the heat whenever possible, especially during peak sun hours between 11am and 3pm. If you must be outdoors, staying in the shade, wearing sunscreen, a hat, light clothing, and limiting physical activity is important.

Other recommendations include drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and checking on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, young children, and those with chronic health conditions.

By following this guidance, everyone can better protect themselves against the health impacts of the expected heatwave.
