British Trainers Optimistic as Cheltenham Festival Approaches, Says Paul Nicholls

Paul Nicholls is optimistic about the prospects for British trainers at the upcoming Cheltenham Festival, stating that Britain is “in a better place than we’ve been for the last few years.” Speaking at a Jockey Club media event, the Ditcheat-based trainer highlighted the strength of British contenders and emerging talents as potential challengers to Ireland’s usual dominance.

Last year, Ireland secured a commanding 20-8 victory in the Prestbury Cup. However, Nicholls believes that trainers such as Nicky Henderson, Dan Skelton, and Ben Pauling, many of whom have roots working under himself or Henderson, have developed strong stables, contributing to Britain’s improving performance.

“Nicky has a good team of horses, and I have some promising chances myself,” Nicholls remarked. “We also have some very capable young trainers making their mark. Looking at the current betting, I think we’ve got a few good chances to make a difference.”

Nicholls also acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Willie Mullins, who traditionally brings a large, well-prepared team to Cheltenham. Despite this, Nicholls remains confident about his own squad, which includes standout horses like Grade One-winning novice hurdler No Drama This End. Recently, Nicholls’ horses, including Tutti Quanti, Sans Bruit, and Il Ridoto, showcased their fitness in a gallop session at Kempton Park.

Highlighting No Drama This End, Nicholls explained, “He’s a big, strong horse who thrives on plenty of work. He’s already won two Grade Two races and a Grade One. Comparing him to a great like Denman is a stretch, but he certainly has the same workmanlike qualities and potential to improve.”

Tutti Quanti is also under consideration for the Champion Hurdle, with a final decision pending based on ground conditions. Nicholls noted his rapid improvement and current rating of 151, suggesting he has much more to offer before transitioning to chasing.

Other notable horses include Regent’s Stroll, who narrowly missed winning a Grade One last year, and Quebecois, who may contest races like the Plate or Jack Richards provided the ground conditions suit him.

With a blend of experience and promising talent, British trainers are aiming to narrow the dominance gap and deliver strong performances at this year’s Cheltenham Festival.
