‘Bright and happy’ e-scooter rider will be ‘truly missed’

A Cheltenham school has paid a heartfelt tribute to an 18-year-old sixth former who tragically lost his life in a collision involving an e-scooter and a car last month.

The accident occurred late on Saturday, January 24, around 11 p.m. on St Paul’s Road, near the junction with Folly Lane. The crash involved the young man on the e-scooter and a car, believed to be a white Kia. Police reported that the car driver initially failed to stop at the scene.

The teenager was rushed to Southmead Hospital in Bristol but succumbed to his injuries the following day, January 25.

In the wake of the tragedy, Cleeve School and Sixth Form Centre of Excellence expressed deep sorrow, describing him as a “bright and happy young man” and a “friendly and caring member” of their sixth form community.

The school’s Facebook post on February 5 shared: “Connor was a wonderful bright and happy young man who sadly died on Sunday 25th January. He was such a friendly and caring member of our Sixth Form Community, and will be truly missed by all of us here at Cleeve.

“In our Sixth Form Centre, we have created a memory wall where students honor Connor by sharing their fondest memories. They can also write messages in a book or tie ribbons on a memory tree dedicated to him.

“While this is an incredibly sad and difficult time for many in our community, we will support each other through the coming weeks.”

Following the incident, five people were arrested, including the car driver who surrendered to police the day after the crash. He was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was later rearrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The four others were taken into custody on suspicion of assisting an offender. All have since been released under investigation as inquiries continue.

The outpouring of sympathy extends beyond the school. One community member remarked, “I drove past the memorial in St Paul’s today. Seeing all the flowers shows just how loved this young man was. My thoughts are with his family and friends.” Another added, “So sad. RIP Connor, you’ll be missed by all who knew you.”
