Brendan Beard is ready to make his mark as Evesham United’s starting goalkeeper this season following the exit of veteran shot-stopper Alex Harris.
The 20-year-old showed promising form in last Saturday’s friendly against Cheltenham Town, signaling his readiness to step up.
Beard’s journey to Evesham began after recovering from a hand injury and casually coaching his younger sister, who also plays for the club. A conversation with her coach soon led to a trial with the Evesham first team.

“I was just coming back from an injury and helping my sister with goalkeeping. Her coach mentioned they were looking for a No. 2 keeper and connected me with the manager,” Beard recalled. “I trialled and eventually signed.”
Having played as a goalkeeper since age eight, Beard’s time at the Jubilee Stadium has been rewarding. He made his senior debut last season after Harris’s injury and started the final two home matches, helping Evesham secure their status in the Southern League Premier Division South.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with Coach Dan and the entire staff over the past 18 months. Their support has boosted my confidence and improved my skills,” he said.
In the recent friendly against League Two side Cheltenham, Beard faced some tough shots, conceding three goals, including two by Charlie McCann, who also struck the post. Despite the losses, Beard made several impressive saves.
“The match was a great test for me and the team. Charlie McCann was a standout opponent, but I believe we competed hard and showed resilience,” Beard commented. “I’m taking lessons from the game and looking forward to building on this as the season unfolds.”
Off the pitch, Beard is pursuing a sports exercise and conditioning degree, entering his third year. He also enjoys hiking, gym workouts, and learning about the World Wars, balancing his athletic ambitions with personal growth.
