Breaking One Highway Code Rule in Wet Weather Could Cost Drivers Up to £2,500

As summer draws to a close, the UK faces two major rainstorms over the next two weeks, according to the Met Office. These unsettled weather conditions will bring prolonged periods of heavy rain, making roads hazardous for drivers nationwide.

In such wet and windy weather, motorists must take extra precautions to stay safe and avoid breaking the Highway Code. One rule that’s often overlooked but carries hefty penalties concerns tyre safety, especially tyre tread depth.

A popular driving instructor with over 330,000 followers recently shared essential tips on TikTok about how drivers should adapt during adverse weather. Among the advice: turning on headlights, ventilating the car to counter humidity, braking earlier and more gently, avoiding cruise control, and—most importantly—checking tyre condition.

Tyre tread depth is crucial because worn tyres drastically reduce traction in wet conditions, increasing the risk of accidents. The Highway Code sets the legal minimum tread depth in the UK at 1.6mm. Driving with tyres below this limit can result in fines up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre.

Experts recommend replacing tyres once tread depth falls below 3mm for optimal safety, as stopping distances increase significantly when tread wears down. Different vehicles have varied rules; motorcycles, large vehicles, and passenger carriers must have at least 1mm of tread.

Checking your tyres is simple: look for tread depth indicators embedded within the grooves. If the tread is flush with these markers, your tyres are at or below the legal threshold and require replacement.

Beyond tread depth, illegal tyres can also include those that are incorrectly inflated. Over- or under-inflated tyres impair vehicle control and safety. Drivers unsure about their tyres should consult their vehicle manual or visit a professional garage.

Severe penalties are possible in extreme cases, with fines escalating up to £10,000 and potential licence suspension. This underscores how seriously the law treats vehicle roadworthiness.

Finally, if your car starts to skid on wet roads, the best advice is to slow down carefully and keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. By following these precautions and ensuring your tyres meet legal standards, you can drive safely come rain or shine.
