Botched Road Marking Misleads Drivers Into No Entry at Gloucester Petrol Station

Gloucestershire County Council has issued an apology after a newly painted lane on Bristol Road in Quedgeley, Gloucester, erroneously directs drivers into a no-entry junction adjacent to the Shell petrol station. The incorrect right turn arrow painted on the road has created confusion and safety concerns among local motorists.

Residents have expressed frustration at the oversight. One Quedgeley local described the incident as “ludicrous and a total lack of attention,” highlighting the irony that the error occurred on a well-lit street with clear no-entry signage nearby. The resident also questioned the supervision of the contractor responsible and the approval process within Gloucestershire Highways.

In response, Liberal Democrat Councillor Mark Harris, responsible for highways maintenance, acknowledged the mistake and confirmed that the council has instructed its contractor to promptly correct the road markings. The incorrect arrow will be replaced with proper hatching and indicators to ensure safe and clear traffic flow.

This incident forms part of the council’s ongoing responsibility to maintain approximately 3,300 miles of roads throughout Gloucestershire. In February, councillors approved an additional £15 million investment over three years to increase maintenance and resurfacing projects across the county. Moreover, Gloucestershire is slated to receive £200 million in Department for Transport capital grants over the next four years. These funds will support road maintenance, expand cycling infrastructure, and improve bus services.

While errors like the one on Bristol Road are rare, they raise important questions regarding contractor oversight and quality control in public works, underscoring the need for thorough supervision to ensure public safety.
