Boosting Kiwi’s Fiber Intake by 50%: A Surprising Eating Technique

Believe it or not, there is an unconventional way to enjoy kiwis that can significantly enhance their fiber content. Dr. Joseph Salhab, also known as The Stomach Doc, shared this surprising advice on TikTok, revealing that consuming a kiwi with its skin can increase its fiber content by up to 50%, along with providing additional vitamins and nutrients.

While some may find the concept of eating kiwi skin unorthodox, medical professionals at Cleveland Clinic support Dr. Salhab’s stance. They affirm that consuming the skin of a kiwi can boost its fiber content by half. Gold kiwi skins contain about 3g of fiber, while the skins of green kiwis have roughly 3.5g.

Fiber is essential for a healthy diet, as it plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, strokes, and bowel cancer. Adults are recommended to aim for 30g of fiber daily, yet most only manage about 20g.

For those who find the idea of eating kiwi skins off-putting, there are alternative ways to reap the fruit’s benefits. Incorporating the entire fruit into a smoothie or slicing it into bite-sized pieces are less intimidating options.

Dr. Salhab advises, “Kiwi is great for your gut health. It packs a whole ton of vitamin C, it allows your good bacteria to grow, and helps prevent constipation.” However, it’s important to note that consuming kiwi skin is not suitable for everyone, especially those with a history of kidney stones due to the fruit’s high oxalate content, which may increase the risk of kidney stones development.

Incorporating high-fibre cereals, wholemeal breads, beans, fruits, various vegetables, and unsalted nuts like almonds into one’s diet can also significantly increase fiber intake. It’s crucial to obtain fiber from a variety of sources for a well-balanced diet, as excessive consumption of one type of food may not provide the necessary nutrients.
