Bob Mortimer, the comedian and co-host of the acclaimed BBC series Gone Fishing alongside Paul Whitehouse, recently shared a touching update about their cherished dog, Ted. The dog has been a fan favourite on the show since it began in 2018.
During an interview on Saturday Kitchen on 29 November, host Matt Tebbutt asked Bob about Ted’s wellbeing. In a lighthearted moment, Bob mimicked Ted’s voice, saying, “I’m alright mate.” However, he revealed that Ted is now 15 years old, describing him as “knocking on a bit.” Despite his age, Ted still enjoys joining them on fishing trips and appears happy.
Matt expressed concern, mentioning he felt sad seeing Ted being wheeled around. Bob explained that while Ted doesn’t need a wheelchair all the time, for longer trips and rough terrain along the river bank, they now use a pram to help him get around comfortably.

Looking ahead, Bob teased that the final episode of Gone Fishing is “a beauty,” remarking on the show’s unexpected popularity and how it showcases the beauty of the UK’s landscapes. “It’s nice to be reminded occasionally,” he said.
In a candid moment, Bob also discussed his own health challenges. He shared that despite a triple heart bypass surgery in 2015 and medical advice to reduce cheese intake, he prefers to enjoy life on his terms. “The dietitian said, ‘You can have a matchbox-size [piece] every week.’ That broke my heart,” he admitted. “I’d rather have three years less than give up cheese.”
Bob’s health journey includes struggling with shingles last year, which temporarily left him unable to walk and reliant on a wheelchair while filming. He credited Paul Whitehouse’s support during that difficult period, saying, “Paul looked after me and pulled me through.” He added he is slowly regaining strength and mobility, describing himself as “a bit limpy but very grateful to be back up and going.”
Saturday Kitchen continues to air at 10 am on BBC One and iPlayer, where fans can catch more from Bob and his stories.
