Bishop’s Cleeve’s Play-Off Hopes Dashed by Malvern Town in Heartbreaking Extra-Time Defeat

Bishop’s Cleeve faced a daunting challenge on Wednesday night, traveling to Malvern Town with ambitions of securing one of two crucial wins needed for promotion. The away fixtures were always going to test the mettle of the team and their supporters.

In a fiercely contested match at the HDAnywhere Community Stadium, the hosts clinched a dramatic winner in the 114th minute, courtesy of substitute Ryan Brunt. His late strike shattered the hopes of the travelling Cleeve fans and sent Malvern through to the final.

Mitres manager Paul Collicutt paid tribute to his squad’s efforts, saying, “The club is progressing well, but tonight was tough to take. We created chances but failed to convert them, and unfortunately, that’s what cost us.”

Collicutt expressed pride in his players’ commitment throughout the season and extended thanks to everyone involved, especially the loyal fans who made the trip.

The first half saw Malvern dominate possession and pressure, forcing Bishop’s Cleeve goalkeeper Sam Gilder into several crucial saves to keep the scoreline goalless at the break.

After a cautious opening 45 minutes, the second half saw Bishop’s Cleeve come out with renewed energy. Adam Paul Mace orchestrated opportunities from midfield, delivering precise long balls and cross-field switches to winger Adulai Sambu, who troubled the Malvern defense.

Despite an increasing momentum from the visitors, Malvern struck first in the 72nd minute when captain Joe Tumelty headed in from a set-piece, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

With time ticking away, Bishop’s Cleeve launched an intense offensive drive. Their persistence paid off when Jake Lee rose powerfully to head an equalizer, silencing the home fans and sparking wild celebrations among the away side. The tension escalated as Malvern’s Dion Molyneux was shown a red card in stoppage time for a last-man foul.

With the match tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, both teams prepared for a critical 30 minutes of extra time.

The pace quickened, and end-to-end action ensued. Bishop’s Cleeve came close to snatching victory in the 104th minute, only to be denied by a spectacular save from Malvern’s keeper, Josh Bishop, who kept out a near-post header.

Then, mid-way through extra time, Ryan Brunt capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty area, firing home the winning goal for Malvern.

Bishop’s Cleeve fought valiantly in the dying moments of the contest, including a frantic scramble in the Malvern box and a contentious handball claim in the 122nd minute, but the home side held firm to advance and extinguish the Mitres’ promotion dreams.
