Bishop’s Cleeve Play-Off Hopes Dashed in Extra-Time Heartbreak at Malvern Town

Bishop’s Cleeve faced a challenging journey to Malvern Town on Wednesday night, seeking one of two crucial victories needed for promotion this season. From the outset, the stakes were high, especially with both fixtures being away games.

The match was fiercely contested throughout, but the decisive moment came deep into extra time. In the 114th minute, substitute Ryan Brunt delivered a heartbreaking winner for Malvern Town, crushing the hopes of the traveling Cleeve fans at the HDAnywhere Community Stadium.

Mitres manager Paul Collicutt reflected on the game and his team’s season in bittersweet terms. “The club is on the rise, but tonight was tough to take,” he said. “We had opportunities but failed to capitalize, and unfortunately, missed chances often come back to haunt you.”

Despite falling short, Collicutt praised his players’ relentless effort and extended his gratitude to everyone involved with Bishop’s Cleeve, including the dedicated fans who made the trip.

Malvern started strongly and controlled much of the first half, with Bishop’s Cleeve goalkeeper Sam Gilder making several crucial saves to keep the score level. Both teams created limited clear chances, and the half ended goalless after a tense 45 minutes.

After the break, Cleeve drew on their attacking strengths. Adam Paul Mace orchestrated effective long balls and diagonal switches to winger Adulai Sambu, who troubled Malvern’s defense. The momentum swung in Malvern’s favor again when captain Joe Tumelty headed home from a corner in the 72nd minute.

The lead lasted just 15 minutes before Cleeve launched a fierce response. Their sustained pressure led to a brilliant header from defender Jake Lee, bringing the match back on level terms and igniting the away supporters. Shortly after, Malvern’s Dion Molyneux was shown a red card for a last-man foul during stoppage time, giving Cleeve a numerical advantage heading into extra time.

The extra 30 minutes unleashed an intense, end-to-end battle. Cleeve appeared poised to take the lead in the 104th minute, only to be denied by a superb save from Malvern’s goalkeeper, Josh Bishop, preserving his side’s chances.

Finally, midway through extra time, substitute Ryan Brunt capitalized on a loose ball inside the box and powered it home, securing Malvern’s victory. Despite Cleeve’s desperate efforts for a late equalizer—including a frenzied scramble and a contentious handball appeal in the dying moments—Malvern stood firm and advanced to the final, ending Bishop’s Cleeve’s playoff aspirations for the season.
