‘Big, Physical, and Uncompromising’ – Gloucester Rugby Secure Former Bristol Bears Lock Joe Joyce

Gloucester Rugby have confirmed the signing of Joe Joyce, the formidable lock formerly of Bristol Bears, as they prepare for the 2026/27 season. The Cherry and Whites welcome the experienced second row to add strength and leadership to their pack.

Born in Bristol, Joyce became a cult figure during his nine seasons with the Bears, amassing 150 appearances from 2014 to 2023. His impact was recognized through the Players’ Player of the Season award in 2018. After his tenure at Bristol, Joyce moved to Connacht where he has continued to impress, frequently captaining the United Rugby Championship side.

Joyce joins Gloucester as their fifth confirmed signing for next season, following the acquisitions of Dewi Lake and Jac Morgan from the Ospreys, Dan Robson from Pau, and Jean Kleyn from Munster. Standing at 6’5’’ and weighing 119kg, Joyce brings significant physical presence and power to the squad.

George Skivington, Gloucester’s Director of Rugby, expressed enthusiasm about the signing, stating, “We’re thrilled to bring Joe back to the Gallagher Premiership. He’s big, physical, and uncompromising – exactly the kind of player to add an edge to our pack alongside the others we’ve brought in. His leadership and big-game experience will be invaluable for the younger players like Freddie and Arthur. I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Joyce also shared his excitement about the move: “I’m looking forward to returning to Premiership Rugby with Gloucester. It’s a fantastic opportunity. I pride myself on hard work, setting high standards, and contributing my experience to help push the group forward. I’m eager to make a positive impact both on and off the field and help the club pursue success.”
