‘Best Player on the Pitch’ and Derby Delight - Cheltenham Town Boss Steve Cotterill After Bristol Rovers Win

Cheltenham Town’s manager Steve Cotterill expressed immense satisfaction following the team’s 1-0 victory against Bristol Rovers, a result that broke a two-game losing streak and came in a highly charged local derby.

“It’s a brilliant win, especially after two defeats,” Cotterill said. “Bristol Rovers have a very strong squad—arguably stronger than ours. Playing against them in front of a big, noisy away crowd was a tough challenge. We worked hard to keep a clean sheet, which was critical given our recent results, and thankfully, we didn’t give any sloppy moments away. Scoring that goal was a bonus.”

Goalkeeper Joe Day had little to do but was alert when needed, keeping the defense steady throughout the match. Cotterill praised parts of the team’s performance while acknowledging room for improvement. He also commended both sets of fans for creating an electric atmosphere that befits a local rivalry.

Ben Stevenson stood out as the match’s best player, according to Cotterill, despite sustaining injuries that included stitches on his shin and a blow to the face. “Ben was absolutely magnificent,” Cotterill said. “I joked with him to keep those stitches in, and he even borrowed shin pads from George Miller for protection.”

Jonathan Tomkinson scored the winning goal, positioning himself perfectly at the far post to finish with his left foot. Despite playing slightly out of position, his pace and adaptability shone through. “Jonathan has been a great signing and the fans have really taken to him,” Cotterill added.

The game required grit and determination, particularly after the goal. Cotterill contemplated tactical changes to manage Bristol Rovers’ attacking threat but ultimately trusted the team’s structure. “We had to grind it out, especially once we were ahead,” he explained. “The opposition had possession at times, but our defense stood firm.”

Regarding a potential penalty for a challenge on Ethon Archer, Cotterill said, “Ethon believes it was a penalty, and I trust him. If someone had offered me this 1-0 win before the game, I would have taken it.”

Cotterill also highlighted the significance of the win for team morale. Returning players Luke Young and Isaac Hutchinson now join a victorious squad, which boosts prospects moving forward. “We’ve put in extra work this week, especially in midfield, to control the game better,” he said. “Making debut appearances under these circumstances is never easy, but these players rose to the challenge.”

Assessing new signings like Adelakun Hakim, Cotterill emphasized the difficulties of recruitment during this period and the importance of managing players’ fitness. “While Hakim had a tough week, he showed glimpses of the quality he brings, and I am pleased with all our recent additions.”

Overall, Cotterill’s reflections highlight Cheltenham Town’s resilience, tactical awareness, and team spirit that earned them an important derby victory.
