Benidorm Feels Like a Ghost Town as Tourists Note Quiet Streets and Family-Focused Holidays

As summer reaches its peak, beach destinations usually buzz with activity. Benidorm, a popular Spanish resort known for its vibrant nightlife, budget accommodations, and appeal to both families and partygoers, has long been a go-to spot for British tourists seeking sunshine and fun. The bustling resort typically welcomes its highest number of visitors from June through August.

However, this July, the scene appears strikingly different. Harry Poulton, 24, who moved to Benidorm after experiencing its famous lad culture on a holiday at 18, expressed surprise at how quiet the town has become. Posting on TikTok, Harry described the Costa Blanca hotspot as “like a ghost town,” baffled by the emptiness during what should be the height of tourist season. Standing on the main strip, he remarked, “It’s the middle of July, look behind me, it’s dead. I’m on the Benidorm strip, there’s barely any people. This is crazy.”

Holidaymakers currently visiting Benidorm echo this sentiment. One visitor shared, “Our first trip here and I was expecting carnage. It’s full of families,” highlighting a noticeable shift from the typical stag and hen crowds to more family-oriented groups. Others noted the prevalence of Spanish families by the pool, indicating a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere than in previous years.

Financial concerns also come up frequently in conversations about the current tourist trends. One guest commented, “No one has any money. Also, the price they charge to go in summer is scandalous,” while another pointed out that costs have risen significantly compared to two years ago, making Benidorm less of the budget-friendly destination it once was. Despite the higher prices, some visitors agree that the experience still justifies the cost, praising the destination’s enduring charm.

Seasonal factors might play a role as well. Some locals and tourists note that July and August can be exceptionally hot and expensive, influencing crowd sizes and holiday preferences. Travel experts recommend August as the ideal month to visit Benidorm for those seeking warm weather and pleasant sea temperatures averaging around 25°C, with highs reaching up to 30°C.

Overall, while Benidorm remains a beloved destination, its character appears in flux this summer, moving toward quieter, family-centered experiences and reflecting broader economic and seasonal challenges.
