Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his iconic role as Doctor Strange, recently opened up about the grueling diet regimen required for his role, describing it as “horrific.” In a candid interview on the Ruthie’s Table 4 podcast, the 49-year-old actor revealed that eating beyond his natural appetite took a significant toll on him.
Cumberbatch explained that on the last Doctor Strange film, a dedicated chef ensured he met strict nutritional targets. “You have someone who can prescribe what you’re eating and cook for you,” he said. “I needed a set number of calories, multiple meals, and high-protein snacks between these meals — things like boiled eggs, cheese and crackers, or almond butter and crackers. Lots of crackers.” While the exercise regimen boosted his stamina and confidence, the continuous overeating felt unnatural and wasteful. “I could feed a family with the amount I’m eating,” he lamented.
Beyond his personal struggles, Cumberbatch criticized the film industry for its large-scale environmental impact. He called filmmaking a “grossly wasteful industry” pointing out waste in set construction, transportation, food, housing, and especially energy consumption used to create consistent lighting in studios. He noted that actors often face backlash for raising concerns about climate and sustainability due to their high-profile roles and on-set travel.
