Ben Tozer Announces Retirement After Distinguished Football Career

Ben Tozer, the accomplished defender and former captain of Cheltenham Town, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35. Born in Plymouth, Tozer’s career spanned numerous clubs and more than 600 appearances, highlighted by four promotions.

Launching his career with Plymouth Argyle, Tozer’s journey included stints at Newcastle United and Swindon Town, before solidifying his reputation at Northampton Town, Yeovil Town, and Newport County AFC. His move to Cheltenham Town in the summer of 2018 marked a pivotal chapter.

Initially playing in midfield, Tozer was repositioned to the heart of defender Michael Duff’s back three, a change that proved transformational. He played a key role in Cheltenham’s promotion to League One in the 2020/21 season, following an earlier play-off disappointment the previous year. His outstanding performances earned him the Supporters' Player of the Year award consecutively in 2019/20 and 2020/21.

In 2021, Tozer transferred to Wrexham for a fee of £200,000, where he again contributed to historic back-to-back promotions, helping the club ascend from the National League to League One under manager Phil Parkinson.

Tozer returned to Gloucestershire with Forest Green Rovers last summer, adding 34 appearances to his record. Despite their efforts, the team fell to Southend United on penalties in the National League play-off semi-finals.

Ben Tozer’s retirement closes a chapter marked by leadership, resilience, and unwavering commitment on the pitch, leaving behind a legacy cherished by the clubs and supporters he served.
