Ben Shephard recently opened up about a common but delicate family dilemma during an episode of the Pack Your Bags with Russell Kane podcast. The 51-year-old TV presenter shared his experience of navigating family holidays with his teenage sons, aged 18 and 20, when they bring their girlfriends along.
The conversation began when a listener asked how to make a first girlfriend feel welcome and included on a family holiday. Ben related instantly, revealing that he too was currently experiencing this phase of parenting.
He advised, “Try to gauge how your son and his girlfriend feel. Find out what she likes, any dietary needs, and try to include activities that everyone will enjoy." He emphasized understanding and empathy as key to easing any tensions.

Ben further noted, “Usually, if a son brings a girlfriend on holiday, they want to ‘muck in’ and be part of the group. We’ve always made sure to treat everyone equally so no one feels singled out.”
He also shared a specific instance when he felt the need to set clear boundaries. “On one holiday, my eldest son was staying with his girlfriend while his younger brother and my godson were also there. We told him to be mindful of the younger kids and not spend all his time in his room with his girlfriend," he said.
He recalled, “The very next morning, I found them all laughing and hanging out together. It made me realize as parents we often overthink these situations.”
Ben concluded by stating the importance of open communication: “Talking with your son and the girlfriend’s family about expectations helps build trust and ensures a comfortable environment for everyone.”
Aside from sharing his family insights, Ben Shephard is back on ITV screens tonight at 9pm with his new show, The Summit.
