Ben Fogle, the renowned adventurer and television presenter, has admitted that his latest Channel 5 documentary, filmed across China, includes footage that may anger Chinese authorities. The series, titled Ben Fogle in China, premieres on April 6 and showcases a candid and immersive journey rarely seen on mainstream television.
Reflecting on his experience, Fogle described the project to Radio Times as “the most interesting travel journey” of his career. However, he also expressed concern about potential repercussions: “I’m reconciled to the fact I might not be returning to China any time soon.”
Throughout filming, the team encountered challenges in navigating the sensitivities of Chinese censorship. Ben revealed, “We had to think very carefully because there are a number of things we filmed that the authorities there won’t be happy with.” Despite an assigned government observer supposed to monitor the crew, Fogle noted, “they’d often disappear when the temptation of tea and cakes arose,” allowing for a more genuine depiction of local life.

The documentary offers viewers a deep dive into China’s rich culture and hidden corners. Among his experiences, Fogle explores the iconic Great Wall, works as a film extra at the world’s largest outdoor film studio, and investigates traditional Chinese medicine markets. He also visits a cockroach farm producing items such as toothpaste and shampoo, marvels at the scenic Longji rice terraces, and tours a center dedicated to releasing giant pandas back into the wild.
Fogle shared his motivation behind the series: “I’ve travelled to some of the most remote corners of the world, but China is a place I’ve never explored until now. This was an incredible opportunity to go beyond the headlines and the stereotypes and discover the real China through the people who are shaping its future. I went in search of friends and came back with some incredible stories that haven’t been told before.”
With excitement already building among viewers on social media, fans are eager to watch Fogle’s latest adventure. Many praise him as one of the best travel presenters, expressing anticipation for the series’ debut.
