Ben Fogle Faces Uncertain Return to China After Revealing Sensitive Footage in New Documentary

Ben Fogle has admitted that some of the footage captured during the filming of his new Channel 5 documentary, Ben Fogle in China, may not sit well with Chinese authorities. The adventurer and TV presenter traveled extensively across China for the series, which premieres on April 6, providing viewers with what he calls “the most interesting travel journey” of his career.

In an interview with Radio Times, Fogle revealed his awareness that his candid approach might jeopardize future trips to the country. “I’m reconciled to the fact I might not be returning to China any time soon,” he said. The presenter elaborated that certain scenes they filmed were sensitive: “There are a number of things we filmed that the authorities there won’t be happy with.” Despite the presence of a government-assigned observer during filming, Fogle noted that the monitor sometimes slipped away — “when the temptation of tea and cakes arose” — allowing the crew some freedom to document their ‘lived experience’ authentically.

The documentary takes viewers to iconic sites such as the Great Wall, the world’s largest outdoor film studio where Fogle works briefly as an extra, and traditional Chinese medicine markets. He also explores a cockroach farm dedicated to producing items like toothpaste and shampoo, the stunning rice terraces at Longji, and a conservation center that prepares giant pandas for release back into the wild.

Reflecting on his journey, Fogle said, “China is a place I’ve never explored until now, despite having traveled to some of the world’s most remote corners. This was an incredible opportunity to look beyond headlines and stereotypes and discover the real China through the people shaping its future.” He added, “I went in search of friends and came back with some incredible stories that haven’t been told before.”

Despite the challenges encountered during production, Fogle expressed pride in the series and excitement to share it. Anticipation among viewers is already high, with fans praising him on social media and eagerly awaiting the premiere.

Ben Fogle in China airs on Channel 5 starting Monday, April 6 at 9pm.
