beloved Lydney restaurant Bengal Balti closes after early morning fire

The much-loved Bengal Balti restaurant in Lydney’s Forest of Dean has been forced to close indefinitely after a fire broke out in the early hours of Monday morning. The blaze, which started in the restaurant’s kitchen at around 3:17 am, caused extensive damage to the venue, a neighboring commercial property, and a first-floor flat above.

Six fire engines, a water carrier, and an aerial ladder platform were deployed to the scene on Hill Street, part of the Cavendish Buildings, where the fire took more than five hours to extinguish. Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that while the restaurant and commercial spaces suffered substantial smoke and fire damage, no injuries were reported.

In a heartfelt social media statement, Bengal Balti expressed shock over the incident, describing the restaurant as their “home” filled with precious memories. They assured the public that everyone is safe and thanked the fire service for their efforts. As they work with authorities to determine the cause, the restaurant will remain closed while they assess the damage and plan for recovery.

The incident also impacted a nearby business, All About Eve lingerie shop, which announced a temporary closure due to fire damage from the adjacent premises. Residents in the area were advised by local police to avoid the vicinity and keep windows and doors shut during the firefighting efforts. Traffic delays occurred as motorists were redirected via the A48 bypass.

The community has rallied around Bengal Balti, with many expressing sympathy and support, hoping for a swift reopening of the beloved eatery. Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue continues to investigate the fire’s cause as the Forest of Dean community comes together during this challenging time.
