Beloved Dad and Community Champion Wayne Ellis Dies Suddenly at Quedgeley School

Wayne Ellis, a devoted father and cherished member of the Waterwells Primary Academy community in Quedgeley, tragically passed away at just 48 years old after collapsing on the school field on the afternoon of June 4. Wayne was refereeing a tag rugby match when the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity was urgently called to the scene. Despite efforts to save him, Wayne died at the school.

Described as a “gentle giant” and a “silent hero,” Wayne gave countless hours to the school, coaching tag rugby, serving as Chair of the Friends of Waterwells PTA, and organizing beloved events such as discos, summer fairs, and Christmas celebrations. A passionate music lover and DJ, Wayne frequently brightened the school community with his upbeat spirit and dance moves.

Wayne’s commitment extended beyond events; he regularly aided with school trips, supported children with reading, helped maintain school facilities, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. His selflessness and warmth made him an integral and deeply loved figure at Waterwells.

In the wake of Wayne’s untimely death, a GoFundMe page established in his memory has raised over £8,000 in just five days to support his family during this heartbreaking time. Close friend Felicity Tucker, who created the fundraiser, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming community support. She emphasized how Wayne’s generosity and kindness have left a lasting impact, not only on the school but also on his family and friends.

Felicity also shared touching memories of Wayne’s relationship with his partner, Jenny, a long-time teaching assistant at Waterwells, who he met through a dating site Felicity encouraged her to try. Their 15 years together were marked by love, devotion, and mutual support. Wayne was a loving father to their daughters and a father figure to Jenny’s children from a previous relationship.

Wayne’s sudden passing has deeply affected families and staff at the school. Felicity remarked on how difficult it is to face the loss of someone so young and vibrant, and highlighted the community’s desire to come together to support Jenny and the girls. The fundraiser will help cover funeral costs and provide continued assistance in the weeks and months ahead.

Though the official cause of death is believed to be sudden cardiac arrest, Wayne was known to be healthy and had no known prior medical conditions. His warmth, humor, and generosity will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
