Beloved ‘Cosy but Quirky’ Cirencester Pub to Reopen Thanks to Five Local Friends

A cherished Cirencester pub with nearly 150 years of history is poised for a vibrant comeback next month, thanks to the dedication and investment of five local businessmen. The Talbot Inn, located on Victoria Road and originally opened in 1877 by Arkell’s Brewery, had remained under the brewery’s ownership ever since. However, it closed its doors in October 2025 after longtime landlords Dave and Ann Hollis retired.

For months, speculation swirled about the pub’s future, with rumors suggesting it might transform into a carvery, a Japanese restaurant, an Irish folk music venue, or even residential flats. These rumors have now been put to rest.

Arkell’s Brewery has confirmed that the lease has been secured by a group of five local entrepreneurs committed to preserving The Talbot as a true community pub. Their vision includes great beer, quality British dining, and excellent bed and breakfast accommodations, keeping true to the venue’s original spirit.

While the pub undergoes a comprehensive refurbishment, the new team is preparing to reopen in mid-May under a fresh name, which will be unveiled soon.

James Burgess, one of the new owners, emphasized: “We want to stop the rumors – this is going to be a pub with fantastic beer, drinks, and top-notch British food, along with the five charming bed and breakfast rooms.”

Chef Ethan Rodgers expressed enthusiasm about his new role: “We’ve assembled a great team, and I’m excited to get into the new kitchen. Neil, who will manage the venue with me, has worked with me before and is looking forward to the challenge. Though he is also getting married soon – sadly not here – we’ll definitely be celebrating together.”

Jono Rooke, another entrepreneur involved, shared his thoughts: “Arkell’s have been incredibly supportive. Having grown up locally, and with experience working alongside Arkell’s, when this opportunity arose, we jumped at it.”

An Arkell’s spokesperson praised the new team: “We were concerned after Dave and Ann’s retirement, given the current challenging climate, that The Talbot might struggle to find new landlords. We’re thrilled to see this passionate local group investing in the future of our community pub.”

The Talbot Inn’s reopening marks an exciting new chapter for the historic venue, promising a warm, hospitable atmosphere and a revitalized hub for Cirencester locals and visitors alike.
