Beloved Cheltenham Pub The Tavern Reopens Under New Ownership Just Months After Closure

The Tavern, a much-loved pub in Cheltenham, has reopened its doors under new ownership only two months after it closed earlier this year. The closure in January was a blow to the local community, with the previous owners having operated the pub for just 12 months before circumstances beyond their control forced them to shut.

Now, the pub has been revived by Jay Rahman of JM Socials, a group that runs 10 pubs and restaurants across Cheltenham and Oxford. Collaborating closely with the new owners is the husband-and-wife team Thomas and Kathryn Law, who will oversee The Tavern’s kitchen. Thomas, well-known in Cheltenham as the head chef of Privthi, an Indian restaurant also under the JM Socials banner, brings his culinary expertise back to the town. Kathryn contributes extensive experience, having led kitchens in some of the Cotswolds’ most prestigious pubs and hotels.

The Tavern reopened on March 6, just in time for Cheltenham Festival week, much to the delight of the community. General manager Sam Noar shared that the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. “We’ve had some lovely feedback. Many are thrilled to see The Tavern back, and it’s been heartwarming to welcome familiar faces,” he said.

One customer even mentioned that his household had been mourning the pub’s closure since January, highlighting just how important The Tavern is to locals. “The Tavern is an institution in Cheltenham with a rich history,” Sam added. “We don’t want to change that. Instead, we’re making subtle improvements to enhance the experience – bringing back live music, pub quizzes, and much more.”

Fans will be pleased to know that the popular gastropub classics remain on the menu, complemented by a few refreshed dishes. Thomas explained, “My wife and I have always loved The Tavern. Being part of its revival alongside Jay is incredibly special. We’re proud to source quality, local ingredients and maintain the welcoming atmosphere everyone knows and cherishes.”

Jay Rahman echoed this sentiment, saying, “Reopening The Tavern is about bringing new energy while honoring its place at the heart of Cheltenham’s community.”

The Tavern’s bar showcases the best of the region’s independent producers, featuring rotating guest taps from Cheltenham’s DEYA Brewery, Lost & Grounded, Arbor, as well as Cotswold Lion, Goffs, and HPA ales — a true celebration of local craft.
