Beckhams Face New Planning Hurdles Over Oak Balcony Addition at Cotswolds Home

David and Victoria Beckham are once again at the centre of planning discussions, this time over a proposed oak balcony at their Cotswolds residence, Maplewood Barn in Oxfordshire. This would mark their 44th planning application since purchasing and renaming the property a decade ago.

The celebrity couple’s request to replace existing “Crittall-style screens and doors” with a new oak-framed balcony has sparked debate, especially considering their past opposition to a neighbour’s balcony plans near their London home. Critics have called the move hypocritical, given the Beckhams’ previous objections centered on privacy concerns.

According to submitted documents, the design aims to blend with the character and heritage of the Grade II listed Maplewood Barn without damaging its historic aspects. The oak balcony, positioned on the western elevation, is described as a simple, sympathetic addition reflecting the site’s existing timber details. The developers emphasize that the work affects a modern extension, preserving the architectural integrity of the original historic building.

While no public objections have yet been recorded, this is not the Beckhams’ first run-in with planning disputes. Six years ago, they lost a high-profile battle against neighbours renovating a nearby London property that included a first-floor balcony. At that time, local authorities dismissed their privacy concerns, approving amended plans.

Since acquiring Maplewood Barn in 2016 for £6.15 million, the couple has undertaken extensive enhancements. These include a new driveway, gates, additional garage outbuildings, a tennis court, treehouse, security hut, and a landscaped kidney-shaped pond—affectionately known as “Love Island” by fans. Some neighbours have criticised these developments, accusing the couple of “bringing suburbia” to the countryside and joking that a funfair ride might be their next addition.

Recent approvals also included enhanced driveway access designed to reduce traffic spilling into the nearby Soho Farmhouse, as well as permission to illuminate their pond after concerns arose regarding previous unauthorized lighting and landscaping changes showcased in a Netflix documentary.

As the Beckhams continue to balance heritage preservation with modern upgrades, the new oak balcony proposal flags the ongoing complexities of making contemporary changes to historic properties, particularly under the scrutiny that celebrities inevitably attract.
