Beckhams Face New Planning Challenge Over Cotswolds Balcony

David and Victoria Beckham have submitted plans to add an oak balcony to their Cotswolds residence, Maplewood Barn in Oxfordshire, potentially sparking a fresh planning dispute. This marks the 44th planning application the celebrity couple has made since purchasing and renaming the Grade II-listed property nearly a decade ago.

The proposed addition involves replacing existing “Crittall-style” screens and doors with a new oak-framed balcony on the western elevation. According to documents submitted on their behalf, the design has been carefully crafted to respect the character and historical significance of Maplewood Barn, emphasizing that no original historic fabric would be disturbed. The new glazing will match existing designs, ensuring visual continuity, while the balcony’s timber detailing complements the existing architectural elements.

Notably, this application has drawn accusations of hypocrisy. The Beckhams previously fought a high-profile planning battle against a neighbour near their London Holland Park home, who sought to add a balcony perceived as compromising their privacy. Despite their objections, the neighbour’s plans were approved after the council determined there would be no impact on privacy or living conditions.

At Maplewood Barn, the Beckhams have already made significant modifications to their estate, which they bought for £6.15 million in 2016. These include a new driveway, additional garage and outbuildings, a tennis court, a treehouse, and a landscaped pond affectionately nicknamed the ‘Love Island’ pond. Some neighbours have criticized these changes, accusing the couple of introducing suburban elements into the rural setting.

After earlier concerns about lighting around their kidney-shaped pond, the Beckhams secured permission to enlarge it and add an island, along with approvals for exterior lighting and landscaping that satisfy local planning conditions.

As they pursue this latest balcony addition, the Beckhams remain at the centre of ongoing debates about preserving the character of historic rural properties amid modern upgrades by high-profile owners.
