The Cotswolds, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), is renowned for its tranquil landscapes, honey-colored stone cottages, expansive trails, cozy pubs, local markets, and charming villages—making it a perfect destination for hikers and holidaymakers alike.
Their featured route is a circular trail beginning in the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water, affectionately nicknamed the “Venice of the Cotswolds” for its enchanting riverside scenery. Bourton-on-the-Water also attracts visitors with highlights such as the Cotswold Motoring Museum, the Model Village, and Birdland Park and Gardens.
From there, the trail meanders alongside the Rivers Windrush and Eye, passing historic churches, mills, manor houses, and stone cottages before reaching the peaceful villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter. Interestingly, the word “Slaughter” comes from the Old English ‘slothre,’ meaning ‘muddy place,’ perfectly describing the riverbanks that run through them.
