Freyja, a bearded dragon affectionately known as Cheltenham’s most popular reptile, has recently undergone life-saving surgery and is expected to return to delighting residents at a local care home.
The story began in November 2023 when Danni Barnard, 32, rescued Freyja after she was found abandoned in a field near Lydney amid near-freezing temperatures. Thanks to Danni’s prompt care, the resilient reptile survived and thrived.
Since then, Freyja has been a steadfast companion to Danni, who cares for a diverse collection of pets including tarantulas, geckos, snakes, tortoises, and a 17-year-old Jack Russell terrier. The duo frequently explore Cheltenham and beyond, even enjoying moments by the canal in Tewkesbury where Freyja partakes in sweetcorn treats while Danni orders Domino’s pizza.

Freyja’s most special role is as a therapy animal at Whittington House Nursing Home in Cheltenham. Danni brings her along every other week, where the bearded dragon instantly wins over residents. “She has quite a little fan club,” Danni remarks. “She sits on their laps and is wonderfully calm and gentle, even with those initially unsure about her. Her visits bring excitement and joy to everyone.”
However, Freyja recently faced a serious health challenge when diagnosed with preovulatory stasis, a condition affecting female reptiles where infertile eggs partially develop but fail to evacuate, risking infection if untreated. She underwent surgery at Highcroft Veterinary Centre in Bristol on 21 August, with costs totalling £1,550, plus ongoing medication and aftercare estimated at £300-£400.
Despite the financial strain, Danni is determined to give Freyja the best care. “She’s my baby,” Danni says. “After all she’s survived and the joy she brings, she deserves every chance to continue her beautiful life.”
Now recovering at home in Cheltenham, Freyja is expected to return to her therapy role soon. Meanwhile, Danni has set up a GoFundMe page to help with veterinary expenses.
Whittington House’s manager Kirsty Hopton praises Freyja’s impact: “Many residents are animal lovers, but we never expected such affection for a bearded dragon. Freyja brightens birthdays and everyday moments alike, offering cuddles, strokes, and tickles under the throat. We’re privileged that Danni shares her with us - she truly is Cheltenham’s most popular bearded dragon.”
