BBC’s Romesh Ranganathan Announces Career Break to Focus on Life Outside TV

Romesh Ranganathan, the acclaimed comedian and TV personality, has revealed that he is taking a break from his television career to spend more time at home and enjoy life at a slower pace. At 47, the Crawley-born star emphasized that this decision is not a retirement but rather a conscious choice to step back and reassess his career priorities.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs with Lauren Laverne, Romesh explained, “I know people say I’m always busy and working non-stop, but there’s no grand strategy or game plan behind it. I’m just doing whatever feels right.” He added, “I feel like I’m starting to wind things down—not completely, but I’m definitely stepping back.”

Romesh is widely known for his BAFTA-winning show “Rob and Romesh Vs.” alongside Rob Beckett, as well as for his travel series “The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan” on the BBC. He also hosts the game show “The Weakest Link,” appears in the BBC One sitcom “Avoidance,” and starred in “Asian Provocateur,” which explores his family roots.

Reflecting on his career transition, Romesh shared that he previously worked as a maths teacher, a job he found more stressful than comedy. “Not a single day teaching felt unfulfilling, but it was by far the most stressful time of my life. Comedy has never come close to that level of stress,” he said, praising the teaching profession.

In 2024, Romesh took over Claudia Winkleman’s Saturday morning slot on BBC Radio 2 and currently hosts “Romesh Ranganathan: For The Love Of Hip Hop” on the same station.

While not retiring, Romesh’s decision to slow down suggests a more measured approach to his work, allowing him to focus on living life beyond the screen.
