Claudie Blakley, who plays Mrs. Isabel Sullivan in the BBC’s popular period crime drama Father Brown, has disclosed that the current 13th series includes a notably darker and unsettling episode. The show, starring Mark Williams as the crime-solving Roman Catholic priest inspired by G.K. Chesterton’s stories, has once again captivated audiences since its latest series launch earlier this month.
Blakley described one particular episode involving a talking puppet as “very disturbing,” highlighting a shift towards a more intense tone this season. Her character, newly married to Chief Inspector Edgar Sullivan (Tom Chambers), faces significant challenges, including being “tormented over a very challenging court case,” and feeling caught in the middle of complex conflicts.
Despite the darker moments, filming also brought lighter, enjoyable experiences. Blakley shared how a seaside episode was “really fun” to shoot, with the cast and crew embracing beautiful weather on the beach surrounded by donkeys, deck chairs, ice creams, and a Punch and Judy show. The atmosphere was made extra special as her daughter appeared in the episode alongside the cast.

The current series picks up following the wedding in season 12, exploring the newlyweds’ life as they adjust to marriage. Isabel’s involvement in the Policeman’s Wives Society, along with Edgar’s recent demotion, adds new pressures to their relationship. According to Blakley, there are moments of adjustment as they negotiate everything from domestic decisions to navigating life’s unexpected changes.
First premiering on the BBC in 2013, Father Brown has grown into a fan favourite. The 13th series continues to deliver familiar faces, including Ruby-May Martinwood as Brenda, John Burton as Sergeant Goodfellow, Nancy Carroll as Lady Felicia, John Light as Hercule Flambeau, Lex Shrapnel as Father Lazarus, Roger May as Canon Fox, and Kieran Hodgson as Father Lindsey.
Father Brown remains a staple of the BBC’s crime drama lineup, blending mystery, wit, and heartfelt character development.
