BBC’s Father Brown Star Claudie Blakley Reveals Disturbing Darker Episode in Series 13

Claudie Blakley, known for her role as Mrs. Isabel Sullivan in the acclaimed BBC period crime drama Father Brown, has revealed that the latest 13th series includes a notably darker and more disturbing episode. The series, centered around Mark Williams’ portrayal of the crime-solving Roman Catholic priest inspired by G.K. Chesterton’s literary creation, returned to BBC screens earlier this month.

Blakley described one standout episode involving “a talking puppet” as “very disturbing,” marking a tonal shift within the new series. Her character, recently married to Chief Inspector Edgar Sullivan (played by Tom Chambers), finds herself entangled in a challenging court case, adding layers of intensity to the storyline.

Despite the darker turn, filming also offered lighter moments, particularly during a seaside episode filmed under beautiful weather conditions. Blakley fondly recalled the cast and crew enjoying the beach, complete with donkeys, deck chairs, ice creams, and a Punch and Judy show—an experience made extra special by her daughter’s appearance in the episode.

The 13th series picks up post-wedding, focusing on the newlyweds navigating the complexities of married life. Isabel’s new role in the Policeman’s Wives Society and Edgar’s demotion add fresh tensions and challenges, including the humorous domestic disputes over furniture and finding the right home.

Since its debut in 2013, Father Brown has captivated audiences with its blend of mystery, warmth, and period charm. The current series continues this tradition with returning favorites such as Ruby-May Martinwood (Brenda), John Burton (Sergeant Goodfellow), Nancy Carroll (Lady Felicia), John Light (Hercule Flambeau), and others.

As Father Brown airs its latest season on the BBC, fans can expect a mix of familiar comforts and unexpected twists, including some truly unsettling moments that add depth to the beloved series.
