BBC’s Dr Morjaria Warns Joint Pain May Worsen in Warm Weather

TV doctor Kiran Morjaria recently appeared on BBC Morning Live to explain why joint pain can intensify during warmer weather and offered practical ways to ease inflammation. The 30-year-old physician highlighted how the natural process of vasodilation—when blood vessels expand due to heat—increases blood flow to the limbs, potentially putting extra strain on swollen joints.

“Why are my joints getting painful in the hot weather?” Dr Morjaria asked during the segment. He explained that vasodilation leads to fluid leaking into tissues around already sore joints, which can worsen swelling and discomfort. Added to this, people tend to be more active outside in the heat, which can further stress sensitive joints.

To help manage these symptoms, Dr Morjaria recommended five essential strategies. First, staying well-hydrated is crucial as drinking plenty of water supports the production of synovial fluid—the lubricant that keeps cartilage healthy—thereby reducing stiffness and inflammation.

He also advised elevating painful joints above heart level to leverage gravity in reducing swelling. Applying an ice pack for 20 minutes every few hours can provide relief as well. Avoiding direct sun exposure during peak heat hours and wearing loose, breathable clothes made from materials like cotton or linen helps prevent overheating and constriction.

Importantly, Dr Morjaria encouraged maintaining gentle exercise when pain is mild to avoid stiffness caused by inactivity. Even simple movements like leg raises—for example, lying down with one leg bent and lifting the straight leg about five inches—can strengthen joints like the knees and reduce discomfort.

By understanding how heat affects joint pain and following these practical tips, individuals can better manage inflammation and enjoy warmer months more comfortably.
