The BBC has released an exclusive first look at its upcoming vampire comedy series, The Reluctant Vampire, a show expected to delight fans of unique supernatural comedies like Wednesday and Being Human.
Shot on location in Gloucestershire and adapted from the works of the late comedy legend Eric Morecambe, the series follows Val, played by Lenny Rush, who faces the challenge of living up to the high expectations set by his traditional vampire father, Victor (Tom Davis). Unlike his family, Val harbors a surprising secret: he is completely human.
The BBC shared a preview clip and behind-the-scenes images showcasing the central characters. Alongside Lenny Rush’s Val are his father Victor, mother Valeeta—portrayed by Fleabag’s Sian Clifford—and his brother Vernon, played by Gabriel Nagy.

The storyline explores Val’s journey as he embraces his humanity while navigating family pressure, including his vampire dad’s customs, his suspicious brother Vernon’s sabotage attempts, and his mother Valeeta’s protective advice, the only family member aware of his true nature. Adding to the show’s charm are the castle’s watchful gargoyles, voiced by Bill Bailey and Ross Noble, who oversee the unfolding antics from their stone perches.
Supporting cast members include Joe Wilkinson as Wilf the werewolf and Asim Chaudhry as the family’s helper, Igon. Charlie Cooper plays a local villager opposing the vampire clan, accompanied by Esther Smith and Ellie-May Sheridan as his wife and daughter.
The BBC describes The Reluctant Vampire as a heartwarming comedy about self-discovery, the struggle between fitting in and standing out, and balancing family expectations with personal identity.
Jon Petrie, BBC’s director of comedy, praised the show, stating, “The Reluctant Vampire exemplifies the distinctive comedy spirit we champion. Rob and Neil Gibbons have expertly adapted Eric Morecambe’s material into a sharp, character-driven sitcom filled with both laughter and genuine emotion.”
He added, “With Lenny Rush’s remarkable talent leading the cast, we believe this series will be one of the standout comedies of the year.”
The Reluctant Vampire is set to premiere later this year on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
