The Repair Shop served up an emotional moment when guest John Geraghty shared the poignant history behind a cherished family heirloom. In the episode that aired on June 4, the show’s experts took on the challenge of restoring items packed with deep sentimental value.
Will Kirk traveled to Oldham to collect a vintage fruit machine, also known as a one-armed bandit, that holds a special place in John’s heart. The machine had belonged to his father, who gifted it to John’s grandmother nearly fifty years ago to mark a new chapter in their lives. Tragically, shortly after the gift was given, John’s father was involved in a fatal car accident.
John recounted the fateful day: “He got a phone call from a very good friend who had broken down. Me and my dad always wanted to help somebody out.” He went on, “We both jumped in the van and reversed off the drive when a friend popped up. My dad said, ‘Why don’t you jump out? You stay here with Neil, I’ll be back in ten minutes.’”

Tragically, a car failed to stop at a junction, resulting in the fatal crash. John added, “By the time the fire brigade arrived, it was unfortunately too late.”
Will Kirk expressed his sympathy: “Must’ve been tough.” John opened up further, “Yeah, because my dad was my soulmate. I’m an only child and we did everything together. I think about it every year, especially on June 28th and on his birthday. We were so close, and it still hurts.”
Describing his father, John said, “He was the life and soul of the party.” He reflected on the significance of the fruit machine, “It’s the one big thing we still have. I can walk past it every day and it reminds me of both my mum and dad. It will be wonderful to see it restored and working again.”
The machine was in dire need of repair—its mechanism stuck and paintwork faded. John had never seen it light up or work properly. Arcade specialist Geoff Harvey took on the restoration, dedicating several days to bring the vintage machine back to life. His effort paid off as the machine was returned to full working order, bringing immense joy to John.
The episode highlighted not just craftsmanship but the enduring power of memories attached to family treasures. John’s story resonated deeply, reminding viewers of the love and loss behind items passed down through generations.
