BBC The Repair Shop Experts Reveal Emotional Challenges Behind the Scenes

Julie Tatchell and Amanda Middleditch, affectionately known as the Teddy Bear Ladies on BBC’s The Repair Shop, shared candid insights into the emotional challenges they face while filming the beloved restoration series.

In a touching segment on a repeat episode of Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, Amanda revealed that she often sheds tears away from the cameras, mindful that viewers might not want to see the experts visibly upset on air. To manage her emotions, Amanda explained she often embraces the guests after revealing the restored item, using the moment as a way to steady herself.

Alan acknowledged the difficulty, admitting he too has been scolded for getting teary-eyed over touching clips on the show. Amanda described the behind-the-scenes reality: “There is always a stash of tissues nearby so we can grab one if needed. It gets very emotional inside that barn.”

When shown a particularly moving restoration, Amanda shared how she supports Julie and herself in staying composed. “I tend to shuffle around and give her a hug — it gives me something to focus on.” Julie added, “You could see I was about to lose it; it was quite clear.”

They went on to explain the teamwork that helps them navigate breakthroughs of emotion. “We’re fortunate to play off each other,” Amanda said. “Different things trigger us, so if one senses the other is starting to struggle, they’ll take over the conversation.”

Since joining The Repair Shop at its launch in 2017, the two have become fan favorites, restoring cherished toys for sentimental owners. Though not related, their close friendship shines through as they work together restoring treasured memories.
