BBC Star Monty Don Admits He’d ‘Never Do’ Chelsea Flower Show Again

Monty Don, the beloved BBC presenter of Gardeners’ World, has candidly shared a career admission: despite the thrill and prestige, he would never participate in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show again as an exhibitor.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast on Monday (23 March), the 70-year-old gardening expert joined hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent to discuss the upcoming Chelsea Flower Show. When asked about the recent decision to allow garden gnomes at the event, Monty expressed a welcoming attitude, saying, “All power to everybody’s elbow, whatever makes you happy.” He emphasized that gardening is inclusive, describing it as “a broad church” with room for everyone’s tastes.

Jon Kay humorously suggested Monty might have stiff competition if David Beckham entered the show with a garden display. Monty was ready with a witty retort, “If he’s going to do it, by the time he’s done, he’s going to be one tired man.” He elaborated on the enormous effort required, calling the show “a major operation” and “very full on.” Reflecting on his own experience exhibiting last year, Monty admitted, “It’s a wonderful experience, but I’d never do it again.”

When asked to give advice to Beckham, Monty didn’t mince words: “Forget your family, forget the rest of your life, you’re going to spend 24 hours a day working on it.” Despite the tough demands, Monty is excited to see Beckham’s potential garden and will be attending the event.

Monty’s debut as a Chelsea exhibitor came in 2025 when he designed a dog-friendly garden inspired by his own pets and the Longmeadow estate. He described it as an “irresistible opportunity” to collaborate with the RHS and BBC Radio 2, celebrating the special connection many gardeners have with their canine companions.

With a long history as a presenter and correspondent at Chelsea, Monty’s honest reflections shed light on the passion and pressure behind one of the world’s top horticultural showcases.
