BBC Springwatch Chaos as Chris Packham Tells Michaela Strachan ‘You’ve Ruined It’

During Tuesday’s live edition of BBC’s Springwatch, broadcast from the National Trust’s Crom estate in Northern Ireland, co-host Chris Packham experienced an amusing on-air mishap involving his colleague Michaela Strachan. The pair were discussing limpets, the marine molluscs known for their strong grip on rocky shores.

Chris was using a replica limpet to explain the fascinating evolutionary history of these creatures, highlighting how their conical shells evolved multiple times over 500 million years as an example of convergent evolution. Michaela added insights about the limpets' adaptation to the harsh intertidal zone, emphasizing how their shell shape effectively disperses the energy of crashing waves.

Contrary to popular belief, Chris clarified that limpets stick to rocks not by suction but through two types of bioadhesive substances—essentially natural glue. While demonstrating this with the replica, Michaela inadvertently slid it across the table and accidentally removed the makeshift radula, the part representing the limpet’s feeding organ.

This prompted Chris to bury his face in his hand, exclaiming, “You just pulled the radula off. Honestly.” Not missing a beat, Michaela humorously balanced the limpet model on her head and joked about taking a mindful moment in the forest. Chris responded, “You’ve ruined it,” as he dropped his head once more.

After the incident, Chris announced that Michaela’s limpet prop had been confiscated, much to the amusement of the audience. The charming and candid exchange offered a glimpse into the relaxed camaraderie between the two hosts.

Springwatch continues with two more episodes this week before concluding on Thursday, June 11.
