Matt Morsia, one of the new Gladiators on the BBC’s 2024 reboot, has opened up about his remarkable recovery following a severe arm injury. The fitness professional revealed that his bicep was entirely detached during a challenge, describing it as “the worst of my life.”
During a recent appearance on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, alongside hosts Fearne Cotton and Talia Mar, Matt recounted the dramatic incident. While tackling a contestant high above the ground, he dove to grab the contender only to find his arm violently pulled back as the contestant clung to a large post. “I thought I’d ripped his vest off because I heard this massive rip. Turned out, it was just my bicep,” he explained.
He further detailed the extent of the injury: “I detached my bicep, so it was just hanging off.” The injury required surgery last year, an experience Matt described candidly on social media. He revealed struggling with intense post-operative sickness that left him unable to eat for 12 days and caused a significant weight loss of around 15kg.

Despite the ordeal, Matt is optimistic about his comeback. “Surgery went really well and I’m gonna be back in no time because I’m a genetic freak,” he posted online. He also expressed deep gratitude to his partner, who supported him relentlessly through his recovery.
Fans and fellow Gladiators flooded social media with messages of encouragement, praising Matt’s strength and resilience. The Gladiators' official account hailed his determination, calling his return “one for the history books.”
Matt’s story highlights not only the physical risks involved in the intense Gladiators challenges but also the dedication required to recover and return stronger than ever.
