A particularly exciting development for long-time fans is the return of Sorcha Cusack as Mrs. McCarthy. Sorcha had been a beloved presence on the show from its beginning until her departure before the 10th series. Her absence had been noted when promotional materials for series 10 no longer featured her, with reports suggesting she left to explore new acting opportunities.
John Burton explained on social media that changes in cast are natural in long-running series, saying: “Occasionally, long-running shows need to be refreshed due to artists' availability. Some long-term artists move on for career progression, which is part of an actor’s life.”
Now, Sorcha Cusack is set to reprise her role in the opening episode of series 13, airing January 9. The episode reveals Mrs. McCarthy’s dramatic return to Kembleford and her reunion with Father Brown. The storyline focuses on Máire Fitzpatrick, a young mother fleeing a local refuge for unmarried mothers, and the subsequent mystery surrounding the adoption of her babies.
As Mrs. McCarthy teams up once more with Father Brown, the pair delve into a gripping new murder investigation involving a missing baby and a suspicious death at the refuge. Despite warnings from Inspector Sullivan and Canon Fox to stay out of trouble, Father Brown’s commitment to justice drives the investigation forward.
Father Brown’s 13th series premieres on BBC One at 2pm on January 9, promising fans a blend of nostalgia and fresh drama.
