BBC Doctor’s 12-Second Test to Assess Your Fall Risk

Dr. Punam Krishan, a BBC GP and Strictly Come Dancing participant, has revealed a quick and easy 12-second test that can help determine if you are at risk of falling. Partnering with stairlift and home lift company Stannah, Dr. Krishan aims to raise awareness about key health indicators so people can maintain their independence and safely enjoy their homes longer.

The test is straightforward and requires only a standard kitchen or dining chair. Dr. Krishan explains: “I often recommend the Timed Up & Go Test to older adults, but it’s useful for anyone to assess their mobility. Sit on a regular chair—not a cushioned armchair—and time how long it takes you to stand up, walk three metres, turn around, walk back, and sit down again.”

To ensure accurate results, it’s important to avoid using your arms to push yourself up from the chair and to walk steadily—not run—during the test, as rushing can be dangerous and affect the outcome.

After completing the test, check your time. Finishing in under 12 seconds typically indicates a low risk of falling. However, taking between 12 to 15 seconds—or longer—suggests an increased fall risk, especially in older adults.

Falls are a significant concern, as over half occur at home, and one in three people over 60 experience a fall annually. Using this simple test can help you and your loved ones monitor mobility and identify potential balance issues early, allowing for timely intervention and increased peace of mind.

Stannah, experts in home accessibility, also recommend taking preventive measures at home to reduce fall risk and promote safe living environments.
