Countryfile presenter Matt Baker has opened up about his battle with chronic back pain that he has been enduring for several years. The 47-year-old TV personality shared a heartfelt Instagram video and message, where he revealed his plans to get back into fitness by creating a rustic gym in his stable.
Matt explained, “For the last few years, I’ve been dealing with chronic back pain, and I’ve honestly felt like a massive part of me has been missing. I’m going to work through what feels like a sticky patch to get myself back in the game.” Drawing from his gymnastics background, he emphasized his cautious but determined approach to training: “I’ll take it gently, and thankfully, due to gymnastics, I know what I’m doing.”
In the video, Matt gave viewers a tour of his new fitness space inside the stable where he is building a gym. He showed off various memorabilia from his career, including a snowboard from his Blue Peter days, a unicycle from his childhood, crash mats from his gymnastics training, and a bike case used during coverage of the World Gymnastics Championships in Japan.

The heartfelt update drew an outpouring of support from fans and fellow presenters alike. Paddy McGuinness encouraged him with, “Love an old skool gym. Make sure you leave enough height for those muscle ups pal,” while Simon Thomas cheered, “Here we go, Baker! Back in the game and remember – it’s just a piece of wood!”
Matt’s wife Nicola added, “It was a workout itself clearing the stable!” and Angellica Bell showed her encouragement, saying, “Let’s go! Get that back better xx.” Supporters expressed empathy and hope that the gym would aid Matt’s recovery.
