Battle Over Street Lighting Ignites Debate in Alderton Village

Plans to install street lighting in Alderton for the first time ever have sparked a heated debate over preserving the village’s treasured dark skies.

Owl Homes Ltd has applied for planning permission to put up four 6-meter-high street light columns off Willow Bank Road, adjacent to the site of their recently approved 48-home development. The company argues the lights are essential for the safety of pedestrians and vehicles within the new neighborhood.

However, many villagers strongly oppose the proposal, citing the importance of Alderton’s lack of light pollution and its contribution to the village’s rural charm. Alderton Parish Council submitted a formal objection to Tewkesbury Borough Council, emphasizing the community’s commitment to maintaining dark skies as outlined in the Neighbourhood Plan. The plan explicitly supports minimizing light pollution and rejects unnecessary external lighting that would urbanize the rural streetscape.

The council pointed out that no street lighting has ever existed in Alderton—not in older parts of the village nor in recent developments—and they intend to keep it that way. They also highlighted a recent survey in which 78% of respondents identified Alderton’s dark skies as a crucial aspect of the village’s character.

Many residents have voiced their concerns on social media, urging Owl Homes to reconsider. “Alderton is a lovely village and doesn’t need street lighting!” one resident said. “It’s a perfect place to live without the light pollution.”

The controversy highlights a broader tension between development needs and preserving rural identity and environmental quality in Alderton.
