Battle lines drawn over street lights in Alderton

Plans to install street lights in Alderton village for the first time have ignited a fierce debate over preserving its treasured dark skies. Owl Homes Ltd is seeking approval from Tewkesbury Borough Council to erect four 6-meter-high street light columns along Willow Bank Road, adjacent to a new housing development of 48 homes approved in February 2024.

The developer argues the lighting is essential to ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicles within the new neighborhood. However, many villagers strongly oppose the proposal, saying the absence of street lighting is a core element of Alderton’s rural charm and identity.

Alderton Parish Council has formally objected, highlighting that the village’s Neighbourhood Plan explicitly prioritizes the minimization of light pollution and the preservation of its countryside character. The council emphasizes that no street lighting has been installed anywhere in Alderton, including recent developments, and intends to keep it that way—both within new sites and on surrounding roads.

A recent parish survey revealed that 78% of respondents consider the village’s dark skies a vital attribute, underscoring the community’s deep attachment to this defining feature.

Residents expressing concern on social media implored Owl Homes to reconsider, with many emphasizing Alderton’s unique appeal without light pollution. One local remarked, “Alderton is a lovely village and doesn’t need street lighting! It’s disgusting that a developer would impose this on our community. It’s a perfect place to live without the light pollution.”

The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between development needs and preserving rural heritage in growing communities like Alderton.
