David Saunders, a 77-year-old runner from Cam, Gloucestershire, attributes his excellent health and medication-free life to his lifelong passion for running. Having run steadily for more than four decades, David is a familiar and respected figure in the local running community.
Since the 1980s, David has completed nearly every Bath Half Marathon, with only two exceptions. This year, he is set to participate again on Sunday, March 15. He describes the atmosphere at the Bath Half as comparable to the London Marathon, an event he has impressively run 14 times over his 45-year running journey.
As a dedicated member of the Dursley Running Club, David recently earned the title of MV75+ champion in the Gloucestershire AAA Road Race Series 2025. In addition, he has raced in the Stroud Half Marathon nearly 40 times, underscoring his enduring commitment to the sport.

David believes the key to his sustained running success lies in “listening to your body.” Remarkably, he has only experienced one injury throughout his long running career. He began running after the birth of his second son and maintains a weekly mileage of 20-30 miles. His running journey started at the running club in Frome, Somerset, where he lived for many years.
For David, consistency is crucial. “I’ve been fortunate to stay almost injury-free by taking care of myself, eating properly, and not overdoing it,” he said. Along with regular sit-ups, press-ups, and squats every morning, David only takes cod liver oil and glucosamine supplements—no medication at all.
Looking ahead to the Bath Half, David no longer chases personal bests, focusing instead on maintaining his fitness. “I run throughout the year to keep myself ticking over. Chasing personal bests is a thing of the past now that I’m 77,” he shared.
David is enthusiastic about the Bath Half Marathon, praising its organization, atmosphere, and the enthusiastic crowd support. He often compares the excitement of this event to the London Marathon, noting the similar buzz and joy from participating in both.
First held in 1982, the Bath Half Marathon attracts thousands of runners annually who eagerly take on the 13.1-mile challenge. David’s dedication and passion serve as an inspiring example for runners of all ages.
