Award-Winning Coach Champions Inclusivity, Making Lawn Bowls Accessible to All

At Olveston & District Bowling Club, the focus is not only on the game but also on making lawn bowls accessible to everyone. Thanks to the dedication of coach Alan Lambourne, recently honoured with the Diversity and Inclusion Award at the Bowls England National Awards Night, this community club is breaking down barriers for players with disabilities.

Located in Old Down near Olveston, the club has transformed its facilities and equipment to welcome individuals with a range of mobility and physical challenges. Alan, who has personal experience with mobility issues, has been the driving force behind installing ramps and securing over £5,000 in grants to acquire specialised gear. This includes adapted walkers, wheelchairs, arm extensions, pushers, and smaller sized bowls tailored for those with reduced grip strength or movement difficulties—all available for free public use.

Committed to inclusivity, Alan collaborates with disability groups and stroke survivors to ensure lawn bowls is an inviting sport for all. The club’s adapted equipment features walking and bowling sticks to aid balance and alleviate lower back strain, allowing participants to enjoy the game safely and comfortably.

“We provide an opportunity for bowlers from surrounding counties to trial our specialised equipment before deciding to purchase their own. It’s about removing uncertainty and encouraging wider participation,” Alan explains.

Many club members have benefited from trying the equipment and have since invested in their own. Now, Olveston & District Bowling Club welcomes people of all ages and abilities to join and experience the sport firsthand.

Grants totalling £5,550 have been generously provided by the Sport England Lottery Fund, Boost Charitable Trust, and Thornbury Lions, all of whom have supported the club’s inclusive mission.
