Auction Vase Sells for 80 Times Estimate

A stunning celadon vase exceeded all expectations at a recent Cotswolds auction, fetching an astounding £16,500—over 80 times its estimated value. The eye-catching piece, which boasts an inverse baluster shape and three small lug handles, was purchased by an online bidder from mainland China.

In addition to the standout vase, other remarkable sales were recorded at the April event. A porcelain vase from the late Qing Dynasty/early Republic period was acquired by a different Chinese buyer for £1,200, while a platinum diamond solitaire ring and an elegant Georgian rivière necklace were sold for £3,800 and £2,700 respectively, both attracting premiums.

The auction also saw strong interest in silver items, with George V silver cutlery sets, Victorian silver column oil lamps, and a Portuguese wine flagon all commanding significant prices. Notably, a vintage Breitling Geneve 2504 automatic wristwatch was another highlight, selling for £370 (plus premium).

The unexpected sale of a slice of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding cake, preserved in a specially commissioned tin from 2011, and three bottles of Chateau Margaux Premier Grand Cru Classe wine from the mid-1980s, were also among the lively bidding action.

Lindsey Braune, the auctioneer, expressed her delight with the event’s success, particularly highlighting the unprecedented interest in the Chinese celadon vase and the impressive performance of jewellery, silver, and watches.

The auction, which featured Silver, Jewellery, Watches, Asian, and Whisky items, took place on April 8 and 9 at The Cotswold Auction Company’s Bankside saleroom in Cirencester.
